Google Maps
NJ Lighthouse Challenge
The creation of this map was inspired by an article that ran in The Morning Call’s (Allentown, PA) Travel Section on Sunday, May 27, 2007 titled “Seeing the lights”. The article, written by Diane Stoneback, documents her exploration New Jersey’s coastal history. A sidebar to the article described the New Jersey Lighthouse Society’s Lighthouse Challenge that takes place on October 20th and 21st, and offers interested individuals a chance to learn about the historic structures while completing a challenging task (visiting all of the NJ lighthouses).
This map is a guide of those structures included in the challenge and is also an example of the power of combining the power of Google Maps with structured data / information to create a useful and usable tool quickly and easily. The map is usable in its embedded form here, but the format/layout can obscure some of the data bubbles. To see a full size rendering of the map, click on the “view larger map” link below the map itself.
